Looking for Extracurriculars

Hello! I'm currently a Sophomore, I've got a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a decent PSAT, those are alright on their own but I'm concerned my extracurriculars will leave me behind. I'm doing robotics and interact right now but those are my only major extracurriculars. I'm interested in Meteorology / Mechanical Engineering, but honestly would take anything to boost my out of school hours, ty!

Hi, first of all, 4.0 UW GPA is impressive, and PSATs don鈥檛 really matter unless you are looking to be a national merit scholar (only for PSAT/NMSQT. PSAT 8 or 9 is really just a diagnostics test in my opinion). For extracurricular activities, the quantity is important, but it needs to be backed by a reason. When I turned my college essay in, I tried to focus on the story that I鈥檝e built, and that helped me a lot. So, my advice would be to go immerse yourself in your interests, but try to build a narrative as you go and make progress. Still look out for quantity of work, but it shouldn鈥檛 bother you to an extent where it makes you anxious.

I was interested in going into information technology in my sophomore year, and I took courses from Coursera, offered by colleges (mine was from UMich specifically 鈥 they offered courses like thermodynamics, Python, C, and even Master鈥檚 degrees for undergrads). This is a great way to get connected with colleges, and if your college considers demonstrated interest, you might be in for something directly positive to your college admission. If you don鈥檛 though, I鈥檇 go ask your counselor and science teacher about any competitions and check government websites out.

These are some examples:

NOAA Internships (Meterology)

wpo.noaa.gov/student-opportunities/

Air Force (Engineering and STEM in general)

afosrstem.org/internships-and-fellowships

I couldn鈥檛 participate in these primarily because I鈥檓 not a green card holder or a citizen, but if you are eligible, I think they would do great.

You鈥檒l do great,

Hi! You're doing great with your 4.0 GPA! Don鈥檛 stress too much about your extracurriculars; focus on quality. Since you鈥檙e into meteorology and mechanical engineering, look for related clubs, competitions, or community projects. Volunteering or taking online courses in those fields can also enhance your experience. Keep exploring, and you'll find more opportunities! Good luck! -From a high school sophomore
