Admissions officers look for authenticity and uniqueness in essays, and sharing a real, personal experience can help your application show both. By describing how dealing with a difficult counselor that didn't offer any help caused you to have a desire to help others, you're showcasing emotional growth and resilience, which addresses the prompt and highlights significant character qualities. IMO, this is a good idea and not too personal. Make sure you frame the essay to focus more on how the experience sparked a passion for serving your community rather than complaining about the actual struggle itself.
Hey, just wanted to jump on here and remind you to be really careful not to turn your experience into what they would consider a "sob story." Your experience is absolutely vaild, and I am so sorry it happened, but I would be really be careful using this as an essay topic. This essay is how the admissions officers meet you, so this essay's topic is important!
