To go test optional or to not go test optionalAnswered
Hi!
I鈥檓 a senior with a 1440 SAT score. I retook the October SAT let鈥檚 just say it wasn鈥檛 the best test. My question is, should I go test optional or not?
I鈥檓 looking at colleges such as UMich, Middlebury, and Villanova. If my research is right, I think I鈥檓 within the 50% for UMich (although honestly it鈥檚 feels a little weird because the middle 50% online looks a bit low), for Middlebury, the middle range is 1440-1550 so even though I鈥檓 in it, I鈥檓 in the lower side of that bracket and for Villanova, the middle is 1450-1530 so I鈥檓 sort of not in that range at all. While I do hope and pray that I can atleast superscore, I鈥檓 honestly not confident. With that said, would a score as such be ok to submit to these colleges? Because I feel like it would just hurt my chances if anything.

A 1440 would definitely not hurt you and you should submit it. I have seen plenty of people aim for SAT scores lower than yours and after all, 1440 is a good score! If you end up not getting in, I wouldn鈥檛 blame it on your SAT score.
Deciding whether to go test-optional can be a strategic choice. Let's consider each aspect to help you decide:
UMich: If your SAT score is within the middle 50%, it could be worth submitting, especially if your other application components (GPA, essays, extracurriculars) are strong. A 1440 is a solid score and showing it could demonstrate you meet the academic criteria.
Middlebury: Being on the lower end of the middle 50% means your score is competitive, but not a stand-out. If other parts of your application are stronger or unique, you might opt for test-optional to let those aspects shine without the SAT being a focal point.
Villanova: Since your score is slightly below their middle 50%, you might consider going test-optional here. However, if your other scores (like from October) improve your superscore, or if your application is exceptionally strong in other areas, submitting your scores could still be beneficial.
Superscoring: If any colleges on your list superscore, check if your multiple test attempts can boost your overall score.
Ultimately, consider your entire application package. If your academics, personal statement, and extracurriculars are strong, you might not need to submit your SAT score, especially if you feel it doesn鈥檛 fully represent your abilities.
