Having trouble deciding on a major

Hey, I鈥檓 an upcoming senior in HS. So I鈥檝e always wanted to be a doctor ever since I was little. (Obgyn - I鈥檝e been gravitating to) So I knew I will be a premed in college. I鈥檓 just finding it hard to commit to a major and actually like it.

I鈥檝e been in a health science program for the past 3 years in my high school and I鈥檝e loved it. I got my CPR, EKG and will get my patient care tech next summer so it鈥檚 been really good so far. The program has helped me a lot in deciding if I would want to continue to pursue premed and I do. Down below is the list of majors I have considered, and I don鈥檛 know yet.

Bio major & Human development minor

Bio major & Public health minor

Public health major with a Concentration in Women鈥檚 and Reproductive Health

Biology major & Business Administration minor -( someone on here actually recommended me majoring in bio and minor in business admin or majoring in bio and minoring in political science)

Psychology major & Bio minor (Or the opposite)

Global health, maybe

Human bio to be specific

Biomedical 馃し鈥嶁檧锔�

Also, while deciding the majors, I kept mind what if I don鈥檛 go to medical school, I want a major that I鈥檒l be able to use without going to medical school . People say biology is a useless major without going to grad school. If I don鈥檛 end up going to medical school that鈥檚 why I kind of want minor in something else. Or maybe major in something else and minor in bio (or anything) to help me with my prerequisite for medical school.

Please help me really in a nutshell, Also, thanks in advance if you do comment.

First of all, I want to congratulate you on starting your journey into the medical field. I've heard it is hard work, but rewarding. A doctor once told me that med school isn't as horrible as people make it out to be, it's just a lot of information in a relatively short amount of time. I think that you will do well in any major you choose, but I would personally recommend a public health major with women's health concentration. Of course, never feel pressured by comments or suggestions from people here or in your life; if you feel like doing something totally different than what's listed, or change your mind down the road, then that is your life and your decision. You are going to do great whichever way you go.

Thank you so much.. I am so indecisive and I don鈥檛 wanna go to college and be the type of person to switch my major like over five times. Your comment have literally made my day today. But could you go in depth on why you would personally recommend a public health major pls.

Of course, I would be glad to! First of all, I researched it a little bit, and biology is usually an included course in a public health major. That way, you could still get biology in there without specifically majoring in it. Also, there is an estimated 7% decrease in how many people are in that field, so you would be filling in a much needed field. There is already a doctor shortage going on, so I think it would only make sense that more specific doctors would be even more needed.

I agree with @Mercyangel on the public health with women's health. I think public health is a great and diverse field that will offer you many job opportunities in a variety of settings if you don't attend medical school. I completely understand about being indecisive (I am also a class of 2024 premed and I finally decided on a major like two days ago lol), but don't stress over it. Get your med school prereqs, and do something you enjoy. I lot of people operate under the misconception that every premed needs to major in bio, but that's totally not true. If you do something you like, you will get better grades and feel better about yourself. I actually recently asked the dean of admissions at an NYC med school about majors, and he told me the only time he looks at majors is when he is compiling the stats on the amount of science and non-science majors in the class. He did also say that he looks to see good grades and passion- he appreciates students who do what they love. So make your choices wisely.

Also, how did you become certified in EKGs? I am a medical assistant and don't know how to do them yet, and all the courses I looked into require to be 18 and have a high school diploma. How did you do it?

Thank you so much for your advice. So the program is at my high school that is offered for four years, it is called Richardson Healthcare Careers Academy. You get opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in a hospital setting from real life healthcare professionals. Freshman and sophomores will take core classes and prerequisites in their home campuses. Juniors and seniors will take practicum level classes at our local hospital near us

Sophomores get CPR certified, juniors get EKG certified, only if u pass the NHA exam. As a senior, you get 3 route, you could go to patient care tech, EMT or pharmacy. I am going with patient care tech so after my last semester, which is spring semester, I will take the patient care tech and if I pass, I get my certification. With this program, I earn college credit for Health Science courses while earning a high school diploma at no cost, Participate in clinical rotations and many more
