What classes should I take in high school if I want to be a business major in college?
Answered

Hi, my name is Vincy and I鈥檓 a sophomore at Burr Burton Academy (Manchester, VT). I鈥檝e been doing some college research during my free time because planning my future is something I like doing. Ever since the end of 8th grade, I鈥檝e told myself that I want to go to Wharton to either major in business analytics or entrepreneurship and innovation. Freshman year there were a lot of classes that were required for me to take, but now I have more freedom. There鈥檚 only a certain amount of classes I can take each semester and want to make the right choices.

Generally, for business majors, I would suggest taking 4 years of math as opposed to the 3 years that most high schools require. Even Wharton's website says they like to see applicants have "a strong preparation in math, particularly calculus." If you're able to take AP Calc (AB or BC) or even AP Stats, then that would be good courses to take if you want to major in business.

It is also important to have a good grasp of the English language in business, so advanced English classes like AP English Language (not AP Lit, that's more for humanities majors), would be good for you. You might also want to take at least 3 years of a foreign language, especially if you want to look into international business.

Some other classes that could be beneficial to you include AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics (or any other econ class), accounting classes, entrepreneurship classes, marketing classes, or any other business-related class.

If you have room in your schedule, you may also want to take computer science or general computer classes. Comp sci is an ever-growing field that is used in the business world, so having some knowledge of it can be beneficial to you.

Note that the class suggestions I have made in this comment may or may not apply to you if the courses I list are not offered at your school. No one student's schedule is the same, so don't stress if you can't take an extra year of a language or an accounting class because of another requirement.
