How much will a gap year affect my profile.

I am an international student, I graduated high school this year but will be applying for the Fall 2023 batch. I have pretty good grades and highly involved in extracurriculars at school ( was the Head Girl and Vice Head Girl). But as I had many interest, I was unsure which path to choose and maybe was thinking of studying in my home country only, that's why I did not apply last year itself. But US was my dream and I did not want to regret not even applying so I took a risk and took a gap year. I did take time and reflect and even did a few research papers and internship during this time but am still unsure about how much emphasis this will pay because I had worked very hard in the 4 years of high school. I intend to major in Communications as it has a very broad spectrum.

In the common app, I only have 250 words to describe this change in progression, most effective way to go about it would be?

You can start by explaining why u didn't apply in senior year. Then explain what u did in a gap year that makes you sure of intended path of study in the US.

but would saying that I was unsure about what to pursue seem like a valid enough reason? And how much would that affect my chances because I was great in my high school

Honestly I feel like if you explain it correctly it might give you a competitive edge many people in the US are unsure about what they want to do with their future for HS and the first few years of college, not having a declared major and being unsure of an end goal. Use the Gap year to explore your passions and decide what you have the potential to be most successful in life.Explain why u where unsure, and that you wanted to take the opportunity to try a,b and c leading to character development

Yes unsure about what to pursue is a good enough reason. Articulate what u did in the gap year.
