How valuable are cancelled summer programs?
Answered

I was one of five students that my school chose to be interviewed by our local American Legion for the opportunity to attend Boys State. Three students were going to attend. The event was cancelled (in my state; check your state's website). Does my (potential) qualification benefit me, or does the value come from the experience of participating in a mock legislature (leadership, collaboration, witnessing the political process, etc.)?

Thank you for reading. Stay safe and healthy.

Hey @ONE23, congrats on being selected for Boys State! That's a great accomplishment and you should be proud. I'm sorry to hear that it's cancelled because of coronavirus, that's definitely a bummer. To answer your question, the main value of Boys State does come from the experience of participating, but that doesn't mean you can't mention being selected in your college applications. It can't hurt. Also, colleges will definitely be understanding that these extra opportunities were cancelled given the coronavirus, so don't stress and remember that most people are in the same situation as you.

When your high school does open back up, you could potentially look for ways to get involved with your school's student government (for example) as a way to create impact for your school community and get some of that additional leadership, collaboration, and political experience!
