What are the benefits of attending a college within a consortium?

Hey guys, I'm a junior starting to think about college apps, and I鈥檝e heard about these 'consortiums of colleges'. So, I'm curious, how does attending a college that鈥檚 part of a consortium benefit me as a student? Do consortia offer any unique opportunities or resources that I wouldn't find at other colleges? I鈥檓 particularly interested in the liberal arts, so insights on those would be extra helpful!

Absolutely, consortia can offer some unique benefits. One of the major perks of attending a college within a consortium is the expanded access to resources. You鈥檙e not limited to the facilities or courses at one institution鈥攜ou often have the opportunity to take classes, use libraries, and leverage career services across all member colleges. This cross-registration can provide a more diverse and richer academic experience.

For example, if you鈥檙e interested in a niche field within the liberal arts that your home institution doesn鈥檛 have extensive offerings in, a consortial partner might fill in that gap. Additionally, consortia might share specialized facilities, like research laboratories or art studios that are otherwise uncommon.

Socially, there鈥檚 also the advantage of a larger, more diverse student body within your reach, which can be particularly enriching in terms of networking and forming friendships. Larger consortia even facilitate inter-campus events, further enhancing the community aspect.

For instance, the Claremont Colleges consortium in California is comprised of five schools which are quite small individually, but together they create an environment more like a medium-sized university. So, your experience at one of these schools would be quite different than if you attended a smaller school that's not part of a consortium, and also different than attending just a single, unified university of the same size, as within a consortium you still have the smaller community of your home institution to fall back on.

I hope this helps, and best of luck with your college search!
