So I've heard a few different things and I want to set the record straight. How many times can you take the PSAT/NMSQT? I know for the SAT you can take it multiple times, but I'm not clear on the rules for the PSAT. Definitely want to maximize my chances for National Merit, so I'm trying to figure out if I can take another shot at it next year if I need to.
Hi there! It鈥檚 great that you鈥檙e being proactive about your PSAT/NMSQT! You're correct that the PSAT is different from the SAT in terms of how often you can take it. The PSAT/NMSQT is typically offered once per year, and while students often take it in both their sophomore and junior years, only the scores from your junior year count for National Merit Scholarship consideration.
So, effectively, you have one shot in your junior year for National Merit qualifications. If you're currently a sophomore, no need to worry鈥攜ou'll have another opportunity to take it next year. And if you're a junior, focusing on your SAT or ACT scores is a great next step.
Remember, doing well on these exams can also strengthen your college applications. The preparation you do for the SAT/ACT will naturally complement what you've learned for the PSAT. Good luck!
