Hey folks! I'm taking the ACT soon and I've heard there's a writing section. What is the ACT writing score actually out of? Can someone break down the scoring system for me?
Hello! Sure, I'd be happy to explain the ACT writing scoring system. The ACT Writing Test, which is an optional essay section, is scored separately from the main ACT test. The writing score ranges from 2 to 12 and is not included in your composite ACT score.
Here's how the scoring process works:
1. Two trained readers independently evaluate your essay, awarding scores in four different categories: Ideas and Analysis, Development and Support, Organization, and Language Use and Conventions. Each category is scored on a scale of 1 to 6.
2. The scores from each category are then added together for both readers. This means that the maximum combined score for all four categories is 24 (6 + 6 + 6 +6) from a single reader and 48 (24 + 24) when taking both readers' evaluations into account.
3. Finally, your total combined score is divided by 2, which gives you your final ACT Writing score between 2 and 12.
