I love marching band and I鈥檝e heard HBCU bands are next level. For anyone involved or who has seen them perform, what sets these bands apart and which HBCUs have bands known for being especially entertaining or skilled?
HBCU bands are indeed a spectacle and often steal the show at sporting events and parades. From personal experiences watching them perform, I've noticed several key characteristics. They bring a unique flair with their high-energy performances, often incorporating dance routines that get the crowd on their feet. Plus, the music selection is typically a blend of contemporary tunes and traditional band music, which appeals to a wide audience. In terms of precision and technical skill, these musicians are incredibly adept, playing complex arrangements that require impeccable timing and coordination.
As for which schools have standout bands, you might look at Florida A&M University's 'Marching 100,' which is known for their intricate choreography and musical prowess. Another is the Southern University and A&M College's 'Human Jukebox' band. Their performances are electrifying and have been featured on national platforms. My advice would be to watch a few of their performances online to get a feel for what each band offers; you'll quickly see why they're celebrated!
