Hi everyone, my school's planning a field trip to visit some HBCUs, and I'm super excited! I'm just not sure what I should be focusing on during the visit. What are the key things to look for when visiting HBCUs, and how can I make the most out of this field trip to help with my college decision process?

That's fantastic that you're getting an opportunity to visit HBCUs! These institutions have a rich history and offer unique cultural and educational experiences. When visiting, I’d advise you to focus on a few key areas to help with your decisions.

First, look into each school's academic programs. Are they known for a specific field of study that interests you? Talk to professors and current students to get a sense of the academic rigor and support resources available.

Second, consider the campus community. HBCUs are known for their family-like atmospheres, so get a feel for the student life. Attend a campus event if possible, check out the student organizations, and don’t hesitate to interact with students to learn about their experiences.

Third, observe the campus facilities. Are the libraries, labs, and study spaces conducive to learning? Facilities not only reflect a school's investment in student success but also your potential quality of life there.

Lastly, explore the support systems in place, such as career services, tutoring, and mentoring programs. These are crucial for your academic and professional growth.

Before the trip, check if any of the colleges offer special programs like shadowing a student or sitting in on a class. This could give you a deeper insight into the daily life on campus.

Remember, each HBCU has its own unique vibe and strengths, so keep an open mind, take notes, and collect any materials that can help you reflect on your experience afterward. Enjoy your visits, and I hope you find the perfect fit for your college journey!
