Hi friends! I was checking out some universities in Chicago, and I need to know 鈥 is Chicago State University an HBCU, or should I be looking at different schools to get that experience?
No, Chicago State University is not classified as an HBCU (Historically Black College or University). While Chicago State University has a diverse student body and a significant percentage of African-American students, it doesn't have the historical designation as an HBCU, as it was not founded with the express goal of improving African Americans' access to education.
If you're looking for an HBCU experience in the general area, you might consider schools such as Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis, Missouri or Wilberforce University in Ohio. Both are within a reasonable distance from Chicago and offer that specific cultural and educational experience associated with HBCUs. Good luck with your college search!
