I'm a rising senior looking to apply to the nation's top schools (Ivies, BC, BU, UMich) for either Comparative Literature or Communications. I am a published author, a volunteer at my local church, I write the newsletter for my mom's company, I have a 4.37 weighted GPA and a 1510 SAT. What are some things I should focus my essays on?

Your essay is essentially how the admissions officers meet you and hear your voice. So of course, you want your topic to be memorable. I cannot really make suggestions because I don't know enough about you, but the biggest thing is for the flavor of the essay to be you. Show, don't tell, why you are unique...we all are, but colleges are so tired of hearing why a student stands out instead of seeing and reading it with their own eyes.

You absolutely can write about your passion/major, but if you do, you will need to careful...admission officers do not enjoy another boring narrative of how you came to choose this career. Take it to the next level. Find a way to portray who you are through the essay. Remember his essay is where the admission officers meet you. What do you want them to know about your character?
